Keeping your Desktop Secure

Keeping our computers and data secure is among the highest priorities for ITS.  A key component of this is making sure everyone has the latest updates to operating systems, browsers and applications on their computing devices.

You will continue to receive regular notifications and reminders that updates are available.Once you are notified by your device, you should run the updates and reboot your computer at a time that is convenient to you within a seven day window.

To ensure our computers are updated and as secure as possible, we are requiring the installation of updates and reboots.  If after seven days, you haven’t run the updates, the updates will be installed automatically and if it is required by the updates, your computer will reboot.   For more information, see our FAQ on required reboots.

If you are away from the office during these seven days, and your computer is turned off, your computer will automatically apply the updates when you first turn on the computer.  If your computer is left on, it will automatically update after seven days. Again, if required by the specific updates, the updates will be accompanied by a reboot.

Thank you for your help in ensuring that Appalachian's computer resources are as protected as possible. If you have any questions, please contact the Help Desk either by submitting a support ticket (https://techexcel.appstate.edu), emailing support@appstate.edu, or calling 828-262-6266.
