Setting up Novell iFolder for Windows

This article describes how to set up Novell iFolder storage space on university Windows PCs for faculty and staff.

What is Novell iFolder?

iFolder is a simple and secure storage solution that can increase your productivity by enabling you to back up, access and manage your personal files-from anywhere, at any time. Once you have installed iFolder, you simply save your files locally-as you have always done-and iFolder automatically updates the files on a network server and delivers them to the other machines you use.

After setting up the iFolder client and creating iFolders, files that are placed (saved, copied, etc.) into an iFolder are replicated in their entirety, either to other computers or users, or to the iFolder server.

As you change or edit your files, the iFolder client watches for those changes and then only synchronizes the part that changed, thus reducing the amount of time it takes to replicate a file - making it fast and efficient.

Getting started with iFolder on Windows

Open a web browser and go to: http://asuas1.appstate.edu/

Click on Download iFolder3.x Windows Client.

1

Install and run ifolder3-windows.exe

2

3

Continue through the installation keeping the default settings.

Click finish and you've installed the iFolder Client!

Configuring the iFolder Client

  • Go to your programs list and launch iFolder 3 Client
  • Select the Edit menu and then Preferences
  • Select the Accounts tab and then click New
    • Server: asuas1.appstate.edu
    • Username: Your Novell Username
    • Password: Your Novell Password
  • Check Remember password (this will allow auto synchronization)
  • Click Log In and then OK

4

On the iFolders main screen click on the New Button

5

The Server will default to AppalStor1 iFolder Server

6

Click on the Browse Button to set up your iFolder location

Click on Make New Folder and create a folder named iFolder under My Documents (location is optional)

7

Click OK and a confirmation screen will appear.

8

At this point iFolder has been installed and configured for use at ASU. The iFolder will work like any other windows folder meaning files can be saved directly to it or moved there by the drag and drop method. By default iFolder is set to start automatically and is set to synchronize every 5 minutes. To modify these settings launch the iFolder client and select Edit and Preferences. If you want to manually synchronize your iFolder launch the iFolder client and click the synchronize button.

9

Accessing iFolder from another computer

iFolder and its contents can be accessed from any computer that has Internet access. To access your files from a remote computer point your web browser to: http://asuas1.appstate.edu/

Click on Access your iFolder via the web

10

Log in to iFolder web client with your Novell username and password.

11

The iFolder Web Interface will now display your iFolder and its contents. From this interface you can open/save a document to the local computer, upload a document from the local computer, or delete files from your iFolder. When you are finished make sure you Log Out of the Web Interface.
