Imaging a Mac with Casper

How to use the Casper Imaging System to install a Lab or Faculty / Staff Mac

1. Register the new Mac (Netbooting only works in setup, public access or admin VLAN)

2. Netboot the new Mac (N key at startup or Select Casper Netboot-Lightweight from Startup Disk of System Preferences)

You will see a large spinning globe, then an Apple with a small spinning globe under it. At this point you can release the N key and you will be Netbooted

3. Launch Casper Imaging from the Dock (if it doesn't launch automatically) and authenticate to the JSS using your standard ASU username and password.

4. Select the Macintosh HD as the Target Drive. Check the box to Erase Boot Drive to do a clean install.

5. Pick the Lab or Faculty Staff Configuration you need from the Configuration pulldown

6. Select Easy Install

7. Check Reboot When Done

8. Name the Computer. Its best to use standard naming like COLLEGE-DEPT-USER-ROOM or something that can easy be grouped in the JSS inventory

11. Once the Mac has installed and rebooted, the Setup Assistant will run if you selected it to. If they are a new user to Macs, create their account using the assistant as normal.

If you chose a Lab build, the Mac will reboot into the labuser account and be ready to go.

12. If the user has an old Mac use the Migration Assistant to move their files from the old Mac to the new Mac. Boot the old Mac into Target Disk mode (T key at Boot)  when prompted by the Migration Assistant.

13. Now the Mac is imaged with our ACE build and managed in Casper. Moving forward you can update and install anything you need to this Mac using Casper Remote, Casper Self Service, ARD or a JSS Policy.
