Inventory a Mac to Casper Server using Recon

This How-to will explain the steps necessary to get a Mac into our Casper Inventory using Recon. You must have rights to add a Mac to the JAMF Software Server (JSS) in order to Recon a Mac (Tech Support only)

You must first have a copy of the Recon application. This can be downloaded from MacInstallers share on macsys.its.appstate.edu

Launch the Recon app and connect to casper.its.appstate.edu

Recon 1

Click Save.

Authenticate to the JAMF Software Server. You must have Recon rights on the JSS. This right is only granted to Tech Support personnel.

Recon 2

Fill in a username and password for an Admin account on the Mac. This would be the account that has rights to install items on the local Mac. Lights for SSH and Account will go Green if the account is a proper Admin.

Recon 3

Fill in any Bar Code or Asset Tag info. The more info you provide during the Recon process the better your inventory listing for this Mac will be.

Recon 4

On the Location tab, fill in as much info as you can. Same with Purchasing and Peripheral tabs

Recon 5

The click Submit and wait for the Recon process to finsh.

You can also add remote Macs to the inventory using Recon.

Launch Recon on your own admin Mac. Click the Remote Computer or Network Scanner button in the top menu. Find the remote Mac via IP or Range and authenticate with a Local Admin account for the remote Mac. Then run Recon the same as you would on the local Mac.
